alternative energy, appropriate tech, de-growth, building technology
Build-It-Solar "Plans, tools and information to help you build renewable energy and conservation projects." Everything energy conservation under the sun. 'The Energy Conservation', 'Solar Space Heating' and 'Sunspaces and Solar Greenhouses' sections under the 'Projects' menu have some of my favorite articles and build logs.
Removing Freeways - Restoring Cities This site presents a series of short articles on freeway removal projects around the world. Lots of great historical detail.

Flying Concrete Sculpted, organic buildings made with lightweight concrete.
Low Tech Magazine "Low-tech Magazine underscores the potential of past and often forgotten technologies and how they can inform sustainable energy practices. "
computing
Total Commander "... is a Shareware file manager for Windows® 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10/11, and Windows® 3.1." I use the mobile version to browse samba shares on my home LAN server from my phone.
Q4OS "fast and friendly, desktop oriented operating system based on Debian Linux. Providing a set of dedicated utilities and specific optimizations, combined with a focus on getting a productive system easily. This makes it ideal for people who want to get a working environment tailored to individual needs and preferences. From this perspective, Q4OS is suitable for both newcomers as well as experienced computer users." I installed Q4OS on my wife's old Core 2 Duo laptop and it runs great under the Trinity Desktop environment. It reminds me of when I was using Red Hat at college back around the turn of the century.
Haiku OS "Haiku is an open-source operating system that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the BeOS, Haiku is fast, simple to use, easy to learn and yet very powerful." I haven't done a full install of Haiku (yet) but I have run it as a VM and from a live USB. The fastest 'modern' OS install and boot I've encountered.
IDE Cable Prototype #2 Prototype rounded IDE cables with integrated power. I used pages like this as a refernce for my own case-mods and it remians as a nice example of what case modding was like at the turn of the century. In the late 90's and early 00's it was very DIY, very hands on - modifying cables, cutting and modifying cases for additional cooling, hacking together lighting with component LEDs and CCFL tubes, custom paint jobs, water cooling setups built from scratch with custom-machined components- it was experimental, weird, and fun. I still see some case mods that embrace the spirit of weirdness, but the experimental nature of the early stuff has largly gonr away.
The DigiBarn Computer Museum "seeks to capture personal stories and track technological evolution through a large collection of vintage computer systems, manuals, videos, interviews, and other fossil relics of the 'Cambrian explosion' of personal computing that ignited in 1975."
the red hill hardware guide cpu index A historical CPU guide covering 30 years from 1971 through 2001.
How to build a version of WearComp6 The 'WearComp' is a wearable computer project by Steve Mann that started in the 70's and was developed over several iterations through the 90s. I highly recommend clicking through the many articles and links on the site. It's a deep dive into augmented reality, human-machine interaction, and their role in society. From the abstract on this paper "... it later evolved into a more diverse apparatus and methodology, combining machine vision and computer graphics, in a wearable tether-less apparatus, useful in day-to-day living. Personal imaging, at the intersection of art, science, and technology, has given rise to a new outlook on photography, videography, augmented reality, and `mediated reality', as well as new theories of human perception and human-machine interaction." For a full listing of Steve's current and past work check here http://wearcam.org/ or here https://www.eecg.toronto.edu/~mann/
K6-2+/K6-III+ CPU System And Motherboard Compatibility List
Total Hardware 1999 Also known as TH99; a mid-to-late 90's compilation of jumper settings for thousands of computing devices. Before the days of plug and play IRQ (and sometimes DMA and I/O address) assignments on expansion cards had to be manually set via jumpers or DIP switches. Jumpers settings also controlled CPU voltage, bus frequency, CPU clock multipliers and more on motherboards. I ran Windows NT4 for some time in the late 90's, and having jumper settings on hand was super useful when running an OS without PnP support. I kept a copy of the TH99 ASCII version burned to CD for offline use. There are various mirrors of the original TH99 like http://www.uncreativelabs.de/th99/ floating around.
The Retro Web project A refresh of TH99 with search functionality and is currently actively updated with new hardware. Manuals, drivers, and BIOS images are also hosted.

Nailing Jelly to the Wall "We've all heard the old saying "it's like nailing jelly to a wall" to describe a task that is very difficult or impossible. But is our view of the difficulty of this task justified? Has anybody actually tried nailing jelly to a wall? In this experiment I attempt to establish, one way or the other, the validity of the old proverb. "
The Museum of Ridiculously Interesting Things "or those with a taste for the peculiar, The Museum of Ridiculously Interesting Things is an imaginary museum that explores the strange place between art and curiosities. Iowa Ghost Towns Stories, information, maps all related to small and ghost towns in Iowa
Strawberry Pop-Tart Blow-Torches Reflecting the Internet's early roots in research and educational circles, many early personal websites were built by nerdy folks with research and education backgrounds. Naturally one early trend to emerge was that of the "mock" science experiment. That is, doing something silly, documenting it tongue-in-cheek fashion as a lab report.
Fun with Grapes - A Case Study Another example of a "science experiment for fun". I immediately had to try replicating this experiment this after bumping into this page. I still occasionally make plasma this way for the heck of it.

We climb buildings, sneak into factories, crawl through all kinds of tunnels, spelunk old brewery caves, poke around abandoned buildings, and run across the rooftops."
DANIEL ROZIN INTERACTIVE ART Interactive mechanical and software mirrors, sculpture, video painting. I first encountered his 'Wooden Mirror' on a .edu pubnix site - https://itp.nyu.edu/~danny/mirror.html - which has been defunct for a while.

linkrolls & directories
Ratcatcher "My own web directory. I try to link to top-level sites where I think the whole website is worth taking the time to look through — ‘evergreen’ rather than ‘deciduous’ content. A few of the sites haven’t been updated in years, but the stuff that’s on them means they’re still worth reading." Inspiration for my own linkroll page.
Web Surfing by John Shutt "this page is honestly no more than a hotlist with delusions of grandure: when I find a URL that I want to hang on to, for whatever reason, I (usually) put it here. Making it globally available being one way for me to contribute to WebCulture. Since I'd be putting in the effort to maintain my "hotlist" anyway, I can get the satisfaction of contributing at little-to-no extra cost (in theory). " John put in the extra effort to timestamp his links with date of most recent URL change and most recent verification of function.

The 1995 Blog "1995: The year the future began ... the year marked the emergence of the Internet into mainstream consciousness. It was the year of the Oklahoma City bombing, an attack that killed 168 people and signaled a deepening national preoccupation with terrorism. It was the year of the double-murder trial of O.J. Simpson, a months-long ordeal often called the “Trial of the Century.” It was the year when a U.S.-brokered peace agreement ended the war in Bosnia, Europe’s most vicious conflict since the time of the Nazis. And it was the year when President Bill Clinton began an intermittent sexual dalliance with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern 27 years his junior; the affair led to Clinton’s impeachment in 1998."

/CSS/ - a guide for the unglued. A sweet little slice of early 2000's CSS design tutorials and resources. When transitioning from table layouts to the CSS box model was new, exciting, and fraught with peril - browser support for web standards was piecemeal at best, and IE hacks were king. Many of the resource links still function and offer a window into the wonder and danger of making a box appear consistently in two different web browsers. Seriously. It was stupid.

about
I've maintained a collection of burned data CDs for over twenty years.1 It might seem silly, but thanks to optical storage I've had reliable, original copies of my bookmarks stretching back through the mid 90s. Sadly, many links are now defunct, but there are enough still functioning to provide a taste of the web pre-2008 or so. More Web 1.0 than 2.0. Many of these sites haven't been updated for years, but they're still fun or useful. All of their designs have remained relatively unchanged since I first bookmarked them. These are my 'Legacy Links' look for the CD drive icon:
At any rate, any links added to the roll will be selected not just for their interest/usefulness but also their 'smallness'.2 I'll do my best to flag sites that might be on the 'heavy' side- large inline images, ads, social links, etc... Happy surfing!
-
Why? Isn't physical media dead? Optical drives obsolete? Nope. Optical data storage is still the most affordable long-term personal backup solution for moderate amounts of data. My case of old discs is computer agnostic, needs no passwords or logins, and isn't at the mercy of a remote/cloud service that may or more likely won't be around in another thirty years. ↩︎
