So I have this friend who enjoys video game soundtracks... he gave me some mp3's from a Super Metroid remix he found. It's remixes of all of the music in the game- a few of them are done poorly in my opinion (the quality is good, but they didn't do the thematic ambiance of the area it's from justice). The "Norfair 2" theme (Y'know.. swim through the lava, take the elevator down... welcome to Ridley's pad!) in particular, is much too happy. Certainly not the threatening mood the game music imposed. But, it's still pretty cool that people like the game that much. And why not... it rocks my socks right out of their basket. (I have no sock drawer)
I dug up the website, Relics of the Chozo - A Super Metroid Musical Collaboration. Upon review, I realize I'm missing a couple tracks.. I'll have to look into that later.
Relics of the Chozo is a project aimed at producing a collective and collaborative interpretation of the soundtrack of Super Metroid.
I suppose I could give a brief statement about my opinion of each track, seeing as how I'm all nit-picky about "not fitting with the theme of the original game soundtrack."
"Premonition of Fell Purpose" Title. It doesn't have the "alone in the dark" creepiness to it like the original. All in all, it's all right.
"Hostile Abduction" The first fight sequence on the station is... interesting. I can't really say if I like it or not... I'd have to say it is very reminiscient of a boss fight. Though, that's probably a good thing, yes?
"Crateria Raining" And down we go... back to Zebes. This is done well in my opinion. Mysterious and ambient.
"Evil aroused" You got the morph ball! Too bad your ass got scaaaaaaanned. This is also done well. Similar in feel to the previous track, but all "aroused", as it were.
"Full of Life" This mix from the first Brinstar stage is very close to the original theme. I always liked the original, and this kept the same feel. Vibrant and... full of life. Prickly, jumpy life.
"Unsettling Nature" Mini-boss theme. Good. Very close to the original. It did keep the unsettling tone of the original.
"Vast Inner Depths of Brinstar" Brinstar 2, or the red lobster colored zone before Kraid and Norfair (Okay okay, and just below Crateria, left from Maridia....) Not too bad. The original was much more subtle...
"Sudden Death" Battle 2, I'm guessing it matches up with the fight with Kraid. Like the "Hostile Abduction" I don't like or dislike it, it's just very different. Kind of light hearted, kind of strange rock/industrial/techno kind of thing going on... still reminiscient of a video game boss fight. (Still a good thing, yes.)
"A Change and A Passing" Chozo tourain.. The part before mother brain with the metroids? I'm assuming 'cause there are metroid sounds mixed into it... Not bad. Unsettling in a way, much like the original. Though doesn't this take place just before you happen upon the zebetites?
"Metal Fatigue" The wrecked ship. I don't know... it's not bad, and I don't dislike it. It's very ambient. I suppose... not much to work with in the wrecked ship beyond ambient.
"Noumenon" Maridia 2 theme... I don't remember which side of Marida it's in, it's been a while since I've played... I'm wanting to say just after the Wrecked Ship (seems logical) It's almost exactly like the original, only with better instruments! Woo!
"Ebb Tide Manifest" Maridia 1... Other... side... of Marida. I guess. Not bad. Much like the original. I've always been fond the Maridia themes in the game, they did a good job with them here.
"Pyroclastica" Norfair 1... Sounds about the same as "Metal Fatigue." Very ambient. Not much to it. I guess the Norfair theme was rather ambient in the first place.
"Braving the Flames" Norfair 2 (Ridley) Eh... not bad, but NOT the Ridley theme. WAY too happy happy happy.
"Percieved by Cold Intelligence" Starts off good.. sounds like Tourain! Bubbles... and lava... and... technology-ness. Breaks into rock/techno/industrial boss fight style in the other "fight" themes. Not really my cup of tea, but still reminisciencent of the boss fight.
"Escaping Retribution" Escape sequence... Not bad, generally all frantic and the like. The rock (drums guitar, I'm asuming along the lines of a rock style) works well.
"The Galaxy is at Peace" Ending. Not terrible. In fact, I'd say it's pretty good. So, that's my impression of Relics of the Chozo. Overall, I'd have to say a job well done. The tracks progressed as you play the game, aside from not repeating the same tracks as you head to Norfair, back to Brinstar, back to Norfair, back to Brinstar, back to Crateria, and so forth through Zebes. Mario ain't got SHIT on the Wall Jump
